WEST ESSEX POLICE DEPARTMENTS SEEK VOLUNTEERS FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RESPONSE TEAM

APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR SPRING TRAINING SESSION.

 

The West  Essex communities of Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Essex Fells, Fairfield, North Caldwell, Roseland, Verona  and West  Caldwell, in  conjunction  with  Rachel  Coalition  and  the  Safe House, has a team of specially-trained  volunteer advocates  available to meet confidentially with victims of domestic violence at police headquarters 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. The volunteer advocates, who are civilian members of the community, work in conjunction with the police to provide support, information, and referrals to victims of domestic violence at the time of the crisis at your local police departments. The advocates also discuss with the victim their rights in regard to obtaining a Temporary Restraining Order. DVRT volunteers, who identities are  kept  anonymous,  are  available  24-hours  a  day  to  meet  with  victims. The volunteer advocates are trained to empower victims to make decisions about their own lives.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have access to transportation, possess a valid NJ driver's license, be willing to serve on an on-call basis, and submit to a background investigation and fingerprinting. Applicants must live in one of the 8 West Essex area towns. Applicants cannot have a criminal history or a history as a defendant in a domestic violence matter. The 40 hour intensive mandatory training course will be provided to successful applicants. Rachel Coalition will be conducting a 14 week training one night per week beginning in March on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Prior knowledge of domestic violence is not required. The West Essex Police Departments and Rachel Coalition are committed to culturally diverse teams to better serve the community. Bi-lingual capability is a plus.
