Township Man Arrested On Charge of Attempted Burglary

On Wednesday, November 13th., police arrested a Township man on charges of attempted burglary to a residence, criminal mischief to property and possession of a weapon.  The incidents leading to the arrest of the 30 year-old defendant, Anthony F. Tomaselli, began at 12:39 p.m. on Wednesday after police responded to a Lafayette Drive residence on a report of an intrusion alarm.  Upon arrival, officers discovered a rear window to the home had been smashed out with a large paver stone in an attempt to force entry into the home.  Officers immediately set up perimeters around the home and the general area in order to conduct a search for suspects.  During this period, an area resident reported observing a suspicious person walking in the area just prior to the burglary attempt.  A short time later, Ptl. Carolyn Zajack observed a subject, subsequently identified as Tomaselli, matching the description walking in the parking lot of the nearby Senior Citizen Complex.  As the officer attempted to conduct a field interview, she observed Tomaselli attempt to secrete an object that was determined to be a large 8” kitchen knife.   At that time Tomaselli was taken into custody for the possession of a weapon under circumstances not manifestly appropriate for lawful use.  Subsequent investigation, including the location of Tomaselli’s cell phone in the backyard property of the involved Lafayette Drive home, led to charges he had perpetrated the burglary attempt.  The defendant was processed on all charges at police headquarters and transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark in lieu of a $35,000.00 bail.  Ptl. Michael Grasso, Ptl. Robert McDermott, Ptl. Richard Macaluso, Sgt. Andrew McPhail, Lt. Joseph Cirasa, D/Sgt. John Kennedy, Det. Michael Tower, Det. Scott Scherer and the Verona Police Department assisted in the investigation.
