Police Arrest Burglary Suspect

     On Wednesday, October 1, 2014, police arrested a Caldwell man on charges of burglary and possession of burglar tools.  The arrest of the 36 year-old defendant, Kristopher M. Lauterbach, followed a 4:30 p.m. 9-1-1 call made by a Ridge Road resident reporting a suspicious male subject, subsequently identified as Lauterbach, had been ringing the interior doorbell to her apartment.  The caller reported after answering her the door, Lauterbach made conflicting statements as to why he was there, causing the resident to close her door and contact police.  While conducting an area search, officers located Lauterbach walking in an adjacent apartment complex where he again gave police conflicting statements as to his purpose.  A subsequent investigation resulted in Lauterbach’s arrest on charges he had forced open the exterior door to the caller’s building with the intention to commit burglary to an interior apartment.  Lauterbach was additionally found in possession of burglary tools believed to have been used to facilitate the forced entry into the caller’s complex and also with the illegal possession of several different pills determined to be Controlled Dangerous Substances.  Police also impounded the defendant’s vehicle, a black 2000 Chevy Cavalier, found parked approximately ½ mile from where police located him.  Lauterbach was processed on all charges at police headquarters and transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark after he could not post bail of $15,000.00.  Ptl. Michael Grasso, Ptl. Joseph Russomanno, Ptl. Robert McDermott, Sgt. Eileen O’Toole and D/Sgt. John Kennedy were the investigating officers.
