Police Arrest Cedar Grove Garden Apartments Burglary Suspect

Date:  February 19, 2016

On Thursday, February 18, 2016, police arrested 37 year-old Kristopher M. Lauterbach on charges relating to the attempted forced entry to an occupied Birch Road apartment located in the Cedar Grove Gardens apartment complex.  Incidents leading to Lauterbach’s arrest initiated at 2:10 p.m., after the apartment resident contacted police reporting a male subject, subsequently identified as Lauterbach, had made way into the locked vestibule of her building and then attempted to forcibly open the front door to her apartment.  The resident reported after hearing someone attempting to open her door, she observed the defendant through the peep hole and called out to him through the door.  The defendant claimed he was looking for someone, before quickly leaving the vestibule in an unknown direction.  The victim also indicated she saw the same subject exiting the rear vestibule door of her building about 10 minutes prior.  Based upon the victim’s description, officers located Lauterbach in another area of the complex and positively identified him as the involved person.  After investigation revealed pry marks on both the rear vestibule door and the victim’s interior front door, Lauterbach was arrested on the charge of burglary.  Subsequent to arrest, the defendant was found to be in possession of a burglary tool (flashlight) and a Controlled Dangerous Substance (93 Alprazolam pills).  Lauterbach, who claimed to be homeless, was processed on all charges and transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, after he could not post the required $15,000 bail.  Ptl. Christopher Lynch, Ptl. Robert McDermott, Ptl. Jason Rivers, and Ptl. Carolyn Zajack were the investigating officers.

The Cedar Grove Police Department requests that the public report all suspicious activity observed, as it occurs.  The police department telephone number is 973-239-4100 and in case of emergency 9-1-1.  All reports are investigated and all assistance is appreciated.
