CPR/AED Saves Life

On Wednesday, January 2, at 8:05 am, the Cedar Grove Police Department received numerous 911 calls reporting a unresponsive male at a Bowden Road residence. Upon arrival police found the male slumped over not breathing and in cardiac arrest. Officers immediately initiated CPR and AED protocols. A LUCAS Chest Compression Device was applied. Chest compressions were performed and shocks were provided. The first responders regained the subjects pulse and breathing. Officers continued to provide care until Paramedics and Cedar Grove Ambulance personnel arrived. Patient care was transferred to the Paramedics and Cedar Grove Ambulance Personnel. He was subsequently transported to Mountainside Hospital in critical condition. The subject remains hospitalized however it is reported that his condition has vastly improved and he is lucid, alert, and expected to recover.

“I am extremely proud of the manner in which all the first responders performed, especially the police officers in those first critical minutes of care. Overall it was a team effort. I would specifically like to note the recent addition of the LUCAS Chest Compression Unit to our emergency medical equipment. LUCAS is a mechanical CPR device providing consistent and high-quality compressions. The unit was purchased by the Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad and carried by police who are the first to arrive. The LUCAS device has resulted in improved emergency medical care. A second unit is expected to be purchased and deployed shortly”.       Chief J. Cirasa
